This poem is by Sherry Taylor, one of our instructors.  It is entitled “I am not a minority.”

I am not part of a minority

1

Whoever said I was a distinct minority?

I migrated to a country, and became a Canadian

I left a country filled with St. Lucians

I walk down the streets and see people like me

Brainwashed by fashion and the latest electronic gadgets

2

Whoever said I was a distinct minority?

I live in a country with thousands of other immigrants

I left a country whose people all have the same nationality

I travel through this world and meet people who live life like me

Struggling with what is ahead and what has passed

3

Whoever said I was a distinct minority?

We all live in a world tarnished by poverty, war, and diseases

We all have a past, a present, and a future

We all journey through life with the future unknown

We are all part of a majority known as the human race
